Publisher’s Message: A 250th Birthday Wish

The July 4th holiday this year has special meaning as the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence is being observed. It seems we, as a population, like to celebrate anniversaries. Expositions and special events, concerts, parades,  fireworks, speeches, commemorative stamps, special issue coins and medallions. Just about anything important, or lasts a long time, is typically noted in some ways.

For the antiques collector the events and related memorabilia offer plenty of opportunities to create, expand or augment a collection. While my collecting habit has changed and broadened a bit over time, I continue to lean toward the period of the American Revolution and four to five decades following. Most of my “period pieces” are more of the primitive or country style and American crafted.

My 250th birthday wish is that this early period is recognized by more people. Colonial Williamsburg, Old Sturbridge Village, Genesee Country Village and Museum, and Shelburne Museum are some we’ve visited over the years.

I suppose I got the “colonial period” bug at Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, which is marking its 100th year of founding.

Chances are if you live in an Eastern state, you can find a museum not far from where you live. Some are major undertakings, and some are small. Many house specialty collections, some are related to a community’s early days, and some are just fun places visit and learn and maybe get a collecting “bug” for some item. Many smaller ones are volunteer operated and deserve support. Find time to visit one during this special period.
